The New Senior Center has been called a “palace” by the seniors who were taken on a tour of the new building. After 20 years of planning, ground breaking for the new Senior Center began in April, 2011 and will be completed during the Fall of 2012. Unlike the current location in the basement of the War Memorial Building, the new $8.1 million Senior Center project offers 20,000 square feet of well-lit, community space where seniors gather for meals, and activities. Many still remember the new location on Beech and Sargeant Streets as the previous site of Holyoke High School. Although the project was fully funded by the City, many have made contributions to help reduce the financial burden, including a $100,000 donation by People’s Bank.
